A free trial is a good deal for both sides when it works as intended: you test the product, and the company earns a customer if it is good. It turns into a bad deal when the trial converts while you are not paying attention. These habits keep trials working for you.
Habit 1: cancel on day one
On Apple and Google Play, cancelling a trial usually keeps your access until the trial period ends. Cancelling immediately means the trial cannot convert, and you lose nothing. Check the cancellation screen before confirming: some offers end access straight away, in which case set a reminder instead.

Habit 2: if you cannot cancel early, set two reminders
Put one reminder two days before the trial ends and another on the last day. Name it with the action and the price: “Cancel Photo Pro trial or pay $59”. A reminder with the price attached is much harder to ignore.
Habit 3: test with a plan
A trial is short. Write down the two or three things you need the app to do, and test those in the first few days. If it fails at any of them, cancel and move on. If it passes, you have a clear reason to pay.
Habit 4: know what payment method is attached
- Store billing (Apple or Google Play) is the easiest to manage, because every subscription is listed in one place.
- Card on a website means you must cancel in your account on that site.
- Virtual or single-use cards, offered by some banks, can limit the damage of a forgotten trial. Check your bank’s terms.
Habit 5: read the conversion price
Trials often convert to an annual plan rather than monthly. A forgotten trial that converts to a full year can be expensive. The price and billing period should be shown before you start the trial; read it.
Habit 6: one trial at a time per category
Running three note-taking trials at once makes a fair comparison impossible, and triples the chance of forgetting one. Test one, decide, then try the next.
What about “free trial, no card required”?
These are the safest trials of all, since nothing can convert without your action. At the end, you choose a plan or the account simply stops. Prefer them when you have the choice.
If a trial converts anyway
Cancel straight away to stop future renewals, then request a refund for the charge. Our guide to App Store and Google Play refunds explains how. Requests made promptly and stated clearly have the best chance.
Make it a routine
Once a quarter, run a subscription audit. Any trial that slipped through will show up as a recurring charge you do not recognise.
