The startup credits playbook

How founders can stack cloud credits and SaaS startup programmes without creating a cost cliff when they expire. Includes an application order and an expiry tracker.

Startup programmes from cloud providers and software companies can cover a large share of an early company’s tooling costs. Used well, they buy months of runway. Used badly, they hide a cost cliff: the day the credits expire, a bill arrives for infrastructure nobody sized properly. This playbook is about getting the first part without the second.

How startup programmes work

Most programmes fall into three types:

  • Cloud credits. Prepaid usage on platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure or DigitalOcean. Credits usually expire after a fixed period.
  • Free or discounted SaaS. A free year or a large discount on tools such as CRM, support desks, analytics and project management.
  • Programme membership. Access to technical advisers, training, partner offers and sometimes go-to-market help, as with NVIDIA Inception.

Eligibility commonly depends on funding stage, company age, and whether you are part of a partner accelerator, incubator or investor’s portfolio. Partners often unlock higher tiers, so ask your accelerator or investor for their perks list before applying directly.

Apply in the right order

  1. Pick one primary cloud. Running production across three clouds to use three sets of credits adds complexity you will pay for later. Choose the platform your team knows best, apply there first, and keep the other credits for experiments.
  2. Claim credits when you will use them. Credits typically start their expiry clock when granted. Applying months before launch can mean watching them expire unused.
  3. Then add the tools you need this quarter. Support desk, analytics, CRM. Do not sign up for everything at once just because it is free.

Avoid the cost cliff

Credits make expensive architecture feel free. Before they run out:

  • Tag every resource by project and owner so you can see what costs what.
  • Set budget alerts at the amount you could afford without credits, not at the credit balance.
  • Review monthly. Ask what the bill would be today if the credits disappeared.
  • Right-size early. Oversized databases and idle GPU instances are the usual culprits.

Track expiry dates

Keep a simple table with programme, amount or benefit, start date, expiry date and owner. Put each expiry in a shared calendar 60 days ahead.

Programme Benefit Granted Expires Owner
Cloud provider A Credits Month 1 Month 13 CTO
Support desk Free plan Month 2 Month 8 Ops
Analytics Free growth plan Month 2 Month 14 Product

The SaaS discount trap

A free or heavily discounted first year is great until year two, when the price steps up to list. Before relying on a tool, find its regular price for your expected team size and check that it fits your plan. If it does not, choose a tool you can afford at full price, or one with an open-source self-hosted option. Our free alternatives page lists open-source options for analytics, forms, scheduling, support chat and more.

Common mistakes

  • Applying with a personal email instead of a company domain.
  • Claiming credits long before you need them.
  • Forgetting that credits rarely cover marketplace software or support plans.
  • Letting a free year roll into an annual renewal no one approved.

Startup programmes are one of the few genuinely free resources available to founders. Treat them as a bridge to a cost base you can sustain, not as the cost base itself.
